Above the city streets are landmarks that paint a different picture to that of the lanes below. The majestic Umaid Bhawan Palace, made from golden yellow sandstone, was built during the 1920s and 1930s to provide work for thousands of people facing famine. Work was slow in order that people could remain in employment. It’s now one of the largest private residences in the world – and it’s also open to guests.
The Jaswant Thada Cenotaph is a must-see on your Jodhpur tour. Not only does it give you lump-in-your-throat views of the Blue City and the shimmering desert beyond, it boasts a remarkable photogenic highlight in itself.
A spectacular, marble-white mausoleum, Jaswant Thada Cenotaph has iridescent walls made of impossibly thin sheets of polished marble, and with carved lattice screens. Inside – and don’t forget to follow custom and remove your shoes before entering – is a regal environment befitting the resting place of the rulers of Marwar.
Outside the mausoleum is a similarly tranquil lake that will give you a striking perspective on the Mehrangarh Fort, which bears down imposingly. One of India’s largest forts, and romantically described by Rudyard Kipling as ‘the creation of angels, fairies and giants’, it is another awe-inspiring marble highlight of Jodhpur.
Owned by the current Maharaja of Jodhpur, it was built by his ancestor some 600 years ago, but has since had ‘a bit of work done’, you might say. Incredibly plush – and cool in every sense of the word – art deco interiors create a perfect antidote to the colour and vivacity of the streets of the city.
Even if you just visit for tiffin – and you can imagine how sublime cucumber sandwiches would be when served on porcelain plates in a marble palace – it’s rather nice to say you’re dropping in to the Majahara’s for a cuppa.
