Soaring 191 metres into the clouds from downtown’s bustling core, Calgary Tower is hard to miss. Though it has now been eclipsed by many a modern skyscraper, it’s still one of the most iconic landmarks in Calgary. From the top, you get some of the best views of the city, the Canadian Rockies and prairies beyond.
Originally known as the Husky Tower and later renamed to Calgary Tower, this impressive structure was built to pay homage to Canada’s centennial and to encourage urban renewal in the downtown area. Building started in 1967 and by the time it opened 15 months later, it was the tallest tower in Calgary and the second tallest in Canada outside of Toronto. Nowadays, it’s one of the city’s most popular attractions and sought-after dining spots. Modern developments have been added over the years, including a theatre room showing short films about the tower and Alberta. Outside, an ever-changing LED light show adds to the city’s sparkling skyline at dawn and dusk.
Aside from spectacular panoramas, the tower’s main selling points are the restaurants. The revolving Sky 360 and Ruth's Chris Steakhouse are some of the finest restaurants in town, offering a unique and unforgettable dining experience.
No trip to downtown Calgary is complete without seeing the city from the lofty viewpoint of Calgary Tower, so make sure you don’t miss out on this famous landmark during your trip.
There’s one reason to visit the Calgary Tower and that’s for the 360° views. Ride the high-speed lift to the observation deck at the top and prepare to be wowed by the jaw-dropping views of the city’s skyline and Rocky Mountains. If you‘re feeling daring, you can step onto a glass-bottom platform with heart-stopping views of the 9th Avenue. Spot key landmarks using the touch screens or binoculars, capture some Instagram-worthy photos or simply watch the world go by. For even more spectacular scenery, visit late afternoon to watch the sun dip below the skyline. To learn more about the tower, you can request a guide.
If you’re looking to elevate your experience, don’t miss the chance to dine at one of the upscale restaurants. Sky 360 Restaurant and Lounge sits at 155 metres tall and revolves every 45 minutes at lunchtime and every 60 minutes at dinnertime to offer diners spectacular views from every angle. If you’re a meat-lover, try Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for prime beef cuts accompanied by award-winning wine list - and great views, of course. An evening in either of these sky-high restaurants is guaranteed to be a memorable experience.
If the weather wasn’t in your favour during your visit, don’t worry - admission lasts for the day so there’s the chance to come back later.
