Why did we start Meraki Travel?

We’ve all done it – stared at the screen after hours of research and felt no further forward with our holiday planning. Lots of great ideas but no clue how to string together something resembling an itinerary. The inevitable fear of missing out as we doubt our research skills and hopelessly wonder what we've miseed.

Creating your own multi-stop holiday from scratch is stressful and time consuming; there's just too much choice.

All good ideas exist to solve a problem and yep, you guessed it, Meraki solves this problem. Too much choice isn’t always a good thing, which is why our expert travel team have gone on a mission to find all the best locations, experiences, accommodation and put them at your fingertips. We've created a selection of unforgettable holidays that you can tailor into your perfect trip and book online.

And so Meraki was born – here are our 3 guiding principles:

1: Work with the best and keep it local

The people who know our destinations best are the people who live and work there. So the first step in creating Meraki was identifying the best in-country partners to help build our holidays and look after you when you’re there. Thankfully our sister company, Kuoni, has been running holidays for decades – so that part was easy. We wanted to offer authentic travel so where possible, we’ve chosen independant hotels and experiences run by local guides - this means you are supporting the people who live in these incredible destinations. Win-win, right?

2: Make our destination knowledge available online

Our Meraki team have years of experience building holiday itineraries and travelling ourselves, so we know how important it is to get your holiday just right. We wanted a website that puts this passion and knowledge in your hands. We've designed in-depth destination guides and blogs for inspriation and created a collection of holidays that can be tailored by you.

3: It’s your holiday so you should make the decisions

We believe you are the perfect person to book your holiday, so our website is all about putting you in control. Don’t worry about how you’ll combine stops, what the best experiences are in each location or hopelessly scrolling through hotel comparison sites – we’ve done it all for you – all you have to do is mix and match the options that work for you. Put your own creativity to the test and see what you come up with, safe in the knowledge that we've taken care of all the travel essentials - think transfers, guides and park fees to name a few!

Meraki is a Greek word that means to leave something of yourself – your soul, creativity or love - in your work. To do something with passion. So when we were looking for a name for our brand new travel concept, Meraki really captured the essence of our business. We felt it summed up our 3 core principles perfectly.

Meraki Travel : Unforgettable holidays, created by us and tailored by you.

Meet the team

Matt Hodgson - General Manager

With over 20 years experience in the worldwide tailor-made travel sector, Meraki has been a really exciting project, being the first to market an online tailored holiday booking service. Making the technology possible has been really rewarding and we hope our customers enjoy the booking experience as much as our incredible holidays.

Best holiday experience?
My favourite holiday experience was 4 weeks in Indonesia with my family – some luxury, some basic – with lots of culture and the amazing hospitality of South East Asia.

Next on the bucket list?
I’d love to take the kids on an African safari, I think it would blow their mind!

A bit about yourself?
Outside work family keeps me busy, and when I’m not riding my bike or watching Netflix, I spend time planning our next big trip.

Jordan Torrilla - Product Manager

I take care of creating and managing Meraki holidays, using my passion to create unique itineraries and experiences in some of the world’s most inspiring destinations.

Best holiday experience?
Visiting Botswana was probably a personal highlight. I was on the terrace of my tent photographing a herd of elephants, when they suddenly started swimming over to me. By the time they were done, they were just a few metres away from me. My heart was racing!

Next on the bucket list?
Uganda. I absolutely love Africa and would really like to see Chimpanzees in the wild within the next year or so.

A bit about yourself?
I’m heavily involved in my local hockey club and play at least twice a week. I also enjoy landscape and wildlife photography and as you’d expect, travelling as often as my schedule allows!

Charlotte Smith - Marketing & Content Senior Executive

I take care of Meraki’s marketing strategy and website content, inspiring customers to travel to our exciting destinations and empowering them to tailor their own holiday.

Best holiday experience?
Me and my boyfriend spent a summer road tripping down the west coast of America from Vancouver to San Diego. It was such fun - visiting the winelands, National Parks, spectacular coastal drives and campfires out under the stars.

Next on the bucket list?
Working in travel, it grows every day! Western Australia, Japan and Argentina are currently top of the list but I can be easily persuaded by anywhere with great food, wine and diving.

A bit about yourself?
Living in London, I’m a serial bruncher and love cooking for friends and family but as cliche as it sounds, travel is my biggest passion. I’ve lived in New Zealand and Australia and spent probably too much time backpacking around the world. I’m a qualified PADI Divemaster and my greatest achievement was a 16-day hike to Everest Base Camp.

Laura Garton - Marketing assistant

I look after Meraki’s social media strategy, customer emails and website content, keeping customers up to date with our new holidays and travel inspiration.

Best holiday experience?
I love Australia, it has everything – the weather, the outdoors, the once in a lifetime experiences and it’s so huge every region feels like a completely different country. My favourite experience was scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef. I pushed myself to do something that scared me but glancing to my side and seeing a turtle calmly swimming by is an experience I’ll never forget. Although I definitely won’t be doing a night dive again after my oxygen tank got stuck on some coral and I thought I’d be left for dead!

Next on the bucket list?
It varies from one day to the next. One day it’s backpacking South America, the next it’s a heritage tour of India and the next it’s an African safari!

A bit about yourself?

I enjoy running, it helps me wind down in my spare time and you can rope me into almost anything with the offer of brunch. On the weekends, you’ll typically find me dining with friends and family, running or jetting off to Europe!

Kirsty Baker – Product Executive

I work in Product, helping to bring the most amazing itineraries to life. Jordan and I work closely with our ground agents in destination to make sure we are offering the best trips possible.

Best holiday experience?
There have been many, but one stand out moment has to be a hot air balloon ride across the Maasai Mara. Watching the sun rise over the incredible Mara landscape with the only sounds coming from the huge flames keeping you in the sky, it really is a pinch yourself moment as you glide over lions, zebra and I even spotted a rhino!

Next on the bucket list?
I absolutely love a trip involving wildlife, it makes me feel so Attenborough, and I would love to visit Canada to see the whales and grizzly bears or into the lesser known national parks of India such as Bandhavgarh to experience a Tiger safari.

A bit about yourself?

Aside from the love of travel, I love my food! I enjoy finding a good spot to eat, somewhere with international cuisine and a local feel to it. When I am not eating, you can find me in the local pub with friends, or at home with a good book.
